1.    Hong Kong is one of the most experienced container ports in the world. Compared with other container ports, are there any unique advantages of HIT?  How does IT help HIT to develop a sustainable advantage to keep their competitiveness?

 

HIT has its unique EGEN system and OMS system to manage the operations of their container port, that enable the ports controller in the tower manage the cargos flow, yard storage and crane machine, which are not used by others. In order to develop a sustainable advantage, the systems keep improving in the capacity, calculation speed and technological supporting function. For instance, OMS system can suggest the best cargo placing according to the destination and transshipment date.






 

 

2.    How is HIT security functioning so as to ensure there are no prohibited products in the port?

 

By using Annjane system, the cargo list should be sent to the system and Customs Department in at least one hour before the container ship entering the port.

Also, there are security patrol team works inside and around the yard and all of the container trucks with or without cargo are divided into two queuing at the gate. Double-checking practice is used to the doubted trucks.

 

3.    What is the contingency plan for the quayside operation when it has extreme weather condition?

 

As for operating the ports 7days a week and 24 hours a day, HIT keeps close relationship with the HK observatory for the sake of extreme weather, particularly typhoon in summer.  When there is a typhoon approaching to HK, HIT will take lashing to prevent cargo collapse, clear the port and stop the operation few hours before the typhoon signal number 8 issued.

 

4.    How can HIT deal with the challenges from the port of Shenzhen as their cargos throughput keeps rapidly increasing?

 

While Hong Kong and Shenzhen are in two market segment for handling cargos, respectively transshipment and shipment export, HIT can keep their advantage in the position with increasing cargos throughput and also maintain their economy of scale.

5.    Facing the great competition with China, how can Hong Kong sustain its competitive advantages as an international export center?

 

HK container ports operators have already developed trust and good relationship with the shipping line as the shipping company rarely shifts the port services provider. Also, they keep the ports work in high efficiency and have good time control in order to make sure the loading and unloading of ship are on schedule; otherwise, compensation and insurance may cost the company a lot. Lastly, they provide sufficient training of people and experts to work with the management system.

 

 

6.    As the global trade and the needs for logistic chain management increases, how can your company diversify your operations beyond the traditional role of a container port operator?
